Independence Day

07/04/13

“These are the times that try men’s souls. The summer soldier and the sunshine patriot will, in this crisis, shrink from the service of their county; but he that stands it now deserves the love and thanks of man and woman. Tyranny, like hell, is not easily conquered yet we have this consolation with us, the harder the conflict, the more glorious the triumph. What we obtain too cheap we esteem too lightly. It is dearness only that gives everything it’s value.” -Thomas Paine said after the signing of the Declaration of Independence

Today, as you fire up the grill, tap the keg, or ignite a sparkler, don’t let the dearness of your liberty escape the moment. Remember to give thanks to the strong men and women who have not shrank away from the service of their country. Let us remember that there will always be others who will wish to evoke tyranny, terror, or otherwise challenge our way of life, but by always seeking to be a virtuous people, we will best ensure our liberties are protected.

Before you chomp into a fully loaded hot dog, or throw back a cold one, make sure you first offer a plate or a drink to a friend, brother, sister, or a complete stranger.. This gesture should commemorate the achievement of our independence as a community, a unified country, and a patriotic society! Rarely is greatness ever achieved by individuals, but when we stand together we can accomplish so much more!

Happy 4th of July!
